Say No to the Government's cruel winter fuel cuts

Thousands of local pensioners will be hit by the Labour Government’s decision to end universal Winter Fuel allowance payments.

Lib Dem Councillor Shaun Roberts said, “Means testing this benefit means that many will miss out. Some may end up choosing between heating and eating this Winter.”

If you think the Government should think again, please sign our petition.

Say No to means testing winter fuel payments

I/we the undersigned call on the Government to rethink its plan to means test Winter Fuel payments.

Labour’s Plan to Means-Test the Winter Fuel Allowance: A Cold Blow for Leighton Buzzard Residents

Labour’s proposed means-testing of the Winter Fuel Allowance threatens to leave many Leighton Buzzard residents out in the cold. This ill-thought-out plan could strip vital support from pensioners who rely on this lifeline to heat their homes during harsh winters.

Means testing often creates unnecessary bureaucracy, forcing older residents to navigate a complex and intrusive system to prove their eligibility. Many who need this support may be disqualified due to arbitrary thresholds, leaving them struggling to cope with rising energy costs.

For a town like Leighton Buzzard, where many older adults live on modest incomes, the universal nature of the Winter Fuel Allowance provides certainty and dignity. Labour’s plan risks creating a postcode lottery, with local pensioners disproportionately affected as they face difficult choices between heating and other essentials.

The Liberal Democrats believe in supporting our pensioners fairly and effectively, without subjecting them to degrading hurdles. We remain committed to universal benefits that respect the contributions of older generations while addressing the cost-of-living crisis through practical, inclusive policies.

Labour’s approach is not only unfair but risks deepening the challenges faced by vulnerable residents in Leighton Buzzard. Our community deserves better. Let’s keep the Winter Fuel Allowance universal and accessible for all who need it.
